Apart from its distinctive aroma and taste, the basil is said to have many more functions. It is very useful for relieving stomach cramps, gastric discharge, vomiting, intestinal discharge, constipation, enteritis. As an anticonvulsant, it has sometimes been used for pertussis. It is also recommended for headaches. In general, the usefulness of the basil is related to the stomach and the organs associated with it. In Greece, it is one of the most common domestic plants. It is used in folk medicine as a herb, as it is believed to be a good diuretic, soothes the stomachache and headache, while in ancient times, it was used as a patch, after biting by an insect, scorpion or even snake.

Flavors various roasts, salads, stews, soups, etc. while being well suited to sauces based on fresh tomatoes (eg especially in summer, a tomato salad with freshly cut basil leaves is a distinctive taste experience). In Italian cuisine, pesto pasta, a green Italian oil and herb sauce, is based on basil.
